This year, discover the freedom of getting organized!
                                                          July 2012

Dear Sue,

Sue Becker, CPO-CD

Ah, summer - time to slow down, unwind, and take a vacation. I've previously written about how to prepare for a relaxing vacation (revisit my tips here), but have you ever prepared for your return from a trip? More likely, within a day or two after you come back from your travels you're immersed in the chaos that made you crave a vacation in the first place! Some simple forethought and planning will help you make a smooth transition back into the real world so you can still bask in the peaceful glow of your time away from the rat race. I hope these tips will convince you that you don't have to dread, or even forego a vacation simply because the thought of getting caught up afterwards is too daunting.

If you'd like help making your home or office as harmonious and peaceful as a day at the beach (well, almost) please contact me. I can help eliminate your chaotic clutter, piles of paper, and jam-packed schedule so you can find time to take a guilt-free vacation. As we celebrate our country's independence, isn't it time for you to discover the freedom of being organized?

Wishing you simplicity, harmony and freedom,

Simplify Your Return from Vacation

relaxing vacation beach ballClean before you go. Attack the piles of papers, wash the dishes, catch up on laundry and wash the floors before you head out the door. Nothing can zap your lingering vacation high faster than entering what looks like a war zone. If you clean things up before you go, the only mess you'll have to deal with when you get home is the vacation clutter. And doing all that work before you go will assure that you really need a vacation!

Have your groceries planned. Have all groceries but perishables already stocked before you go. In addition, create a list of what you'll need to grab from the grocery store upon your return so you can zip through the store on autopilot. Better yet, stop by the store on your way home from your trip so you don't have to run out again. You might also want to have a few meals prepped and frozen ahead of time so you can ease back into the routine of cooking.

Let people know. If appropriate, change your voicemail message and email auto-response to let people know you're away, and when you'll return. That will save you from having multiple messages from the same people who are wondering why you haven't gotten back to them. Don't be afraid to fib a bit about that return date - announce it to be a day later than you'll actually return so you have a day to catch your breath and prioritize things before jumping right back into the madness. And once you have returned, use these tips to plow through the mail and email avalanches that await you.

Attack the laundry. When you return home, bring your suitcases directly to your laundry area. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200. Put dirty clothes right into the washer and get things rolling before you have time to see just how huge that mountain of dirty clothes is. Here are some additional tips on how to keep laundry under control.

Don't let those suitcases loiter. You may recall the Everybody Loves Raymond episode in which Debra and Raymond fought over putting their suitcase away after a trip. Unless you enjoy playful banter and tripping over suitcases for weeks, just empty the darn things and get them put away. Once the dirty clothes are out, just grab each remaining item and put it where it belongs. It should take no longer than 10 minutes per bag - really! If you're feeling ambitious, you might even write down what things you didn't use or wear so you can pack a bit lighter next time.

I'd love to hear what additional tips you have to simplify your return from vacation.

Success of the Month: A simple bill payment system eliminates stress and late fees

Organized bills turn piles into smilesThe Situation:  Adam, a recent college graduate, was overwhelmed by the financial responsibilities that came with living on his own. From car payments to insurance bills, utility bills, student loan payments, and rent, he couldn't believe the number of checks he had to write each month. He resented spending hours sorting through bills and receipts and had trouble juggling the timing of his paychecks with the bills' due-dates. He'd wait until the last minute to pay bills and sometimes incurred late fees and penalties as a result.

The Solution: I helped Adam set up a bill-payment basket to collect his bills and receipts in one place. We identified all his creditors and the due dates of his bills. Together, we contacted some creditors to move their due dates, so they would better coincide with his paydays. We set up the majority of his bills for electronic payment and established a reminder system to make sure Adam would address this task on time. We determined how long Adam needed to keep paper bills and statements and set up a filing system. He emailed me once a week for two months to report on his progress and to help hold him accountable for maintaining the system.

The Outcome: Adam is now paying his bills on time. He told me, "At first, it was a challenge to follow the new process, but the weekly check-ins were a great reminder to follow the system. I hardly have to think about it anymore - it's now a habit. It's such a relief not to worry about which bill is due and where can I find it. And I sure don't miss paying those late fees! Having a system in place has freed up so much time. It's easy for me to pay my bills and get on with my life."
